The Astrological Meaning of a Cazimi
THE ASTROLOGICAL MEANING OF A CAZIMI
What exactly is a cazimi in astrology? And what makes them different from retrogrades?
Every single day, our planets and luminaries dance through the heavens. The Sun, our greatest light in the sky that ties to our life force, is especially important to watch throughout the year and during significant transits. The Sun’s movements always draw our attention to the most notable themes, ideas, and energetic frequencies we experience at any given time. Because the Sun is aligned with pure energy and is an invigorating force, it not only can rejuvenate us, but the energetic frequencies of planets, too.
When a planet unites with the Sun in the heavens, this is known as a cazimi. Specifically, it means “in the heart of the Sun” or a conjunction with the Sun. When a planet does this, the powers, themes, and energies of that planet are fully restored and rejuvenated, as the Sun’s light and power burns away (or combusts) the past cycle to prepare us for the next one. This new cycle will last until the planet unites with the Sun again.
Retrogrades are a different cycle altogether, as they are when a planet is moving backwards in the heavens. Retrogrades bring back matters from the past. If a cazimi is occurring as the planet moves backwards (which happens most prominently with Mercury), this reveals that there may be a rejuvenation around situations, matters, or relationships with the past. When a cazimi occurs as a planet moves forward (into the heart of the Sun), then it fully ushers forth a new cycle into the present and future.
How often does a cazimi occur, and how do they manifest differently for different planets?
Cazimis occur at different timelines all tied to the planet’s movement around the Sun.
Mercury cazimis happen six to seven times in a year—meaning we go through numerous “new chapters” each year around our lives, ideas, and routines.
Venus cazimis happen roughly every nine or so months—meaning these are cycles of rebirth around matters of the heart, romance, relationships, and situations around money.
Mars cazimis happen once every two years—meaning these create new cycles around energy, passion, drive, sex, aggression, conflict, or health.
These cazimis affect us more prominently because they are the personal planets.
The sun conjuncts the outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—once a year. These are also potent and powerful, recharging us around the themes each planet rules.
What can one get out of a cazimi, and how can one plan for one ahead of time?
Cazimis are excellent periods to start new chapters, begin new initiatives, and take action. By laying the seeds of intention and action at a cazimi, you are setting yourself up for the entire next cycle to come. Not only should you pay attention to which planet is being rejuvenated, but you can also hone in on which zodiac sign it is occurring within or which house it is occurring within your natal chart. Channel the energies of this particular zodiac sign or take action around the themes of the natal house that it is “restoring” and “reinvigorating.”
